What is this?

"LEAD SHIELDING VALUE" is NOT THE X-RAY GLASS THICKNESS, but the actual thickness of lead shielding required in the wall, partition, barrier or door as calculated by a radiation physicist for x-ray gamma protection shielding, and all Lead Backed Drywall, Shielded Doors, X-Ray Glass and Lead Lined Frames that occur within that same wall segment or area must meet or exceed this shielding value. The lead shielding thickness requirement may also change from wall to wall and room to room due to many additional factors.

Typically this lead shielding thickness can be identified in either fractional, millimeter or pounds per square foot. If the lead thickness requirement is unknown at the time of quote, qualifying it as 1/16", 1.6mm or 4# is a reasonably common industry practice until an actual specific lead thickness requirement is verified by the radiation physicist shielding report.

*PLEASE NOTE: The customer or end user is responsible to always confirm the actual lead thickness equivalency required prior to the final ordering of any radiation shielding product.

What is this?

Impact Resistant glass is required per International Building Code 2406 "Safety Glazing" when glass is located in a hazardous location such as in a door vision window, or in a wall window within 24" of a door opening

  • Impact Resistant Safety Glass is required at any glazing location within 24" of a door opening, or 36" of a finished floor, or if it occurs in a door.
  • X-Ray Glass must be ordered with the same load shielding equivalence or greater than that required of the partition or door in which it is located.
  • It is the responsibility of the customer to verify and confirm the lead shielding equivalency prior to placing order.
  • All calculations for lead shielding requirements must be determined by a qualified health radiation physicist or other recognized and licensed radiation expert.
  • Customer or end user should have all radiation shielding projects tested and surveyed by their original project radiation physicist of record, who must be a qualified radiation health physicist or other radiation expert as defined by either NCRP or ICRP, after installation and prior to occupancy or use.
